Women & Dessert

Women have always been pegged as having a sweet tooth — the Cathy comic says it all. It’s a complicated business, eating. GrubHub recently released data showing that women are 25 percent more likely to order dessert than men. It seems to be a common phenomenon that women are prone to like dessert more than men. No matter how hungry they are, it seems to me they have retained at least a small portion of their appetite for dessert.

Women & Dessert: Chocolate

Anecdotal evidence suggests that women like chocolate more than men – in April, a study showed a third of women dream about chocolate during the day, compared with only 11% of men. Some researchers say this is because chocolate releases dopamine (a substance which peaks during orgasm) in the female brain.

Of course, chocolate has traditionally been thought of as primarily for children, but secretly for women. When we’re enjoying some feminine “me-time”, we’re heartbroken in pajamas, spooning chocolate ice cream into our communal mouths. We’re chocoholics! We crave cocoa like others need glue.

Psychologists see it more simply, explaining that chocolate’s appeal to women is in its status as a forbidden pleasure to those on diets.

Women & Dessert: Ice Cream

Well, anybody as long as he or she is familiar with American popular culture and one of its almost unshakable tenets: When women get sad or depressed, they cope with their emotions by binging on sweets. Countless are the movie scenes where, after going through a devastating breakup or another major setback, a woman cries her eyes out on her sofa while eating entire pints of ice cream, or stuffs her face standing directly in front of a fridge.

As kids, no summer was complete without some Bomb Pops or Fudgsicles from the ice cream truck. But delicious hot-weather snacks aren’t just for the young ones.

Women & Dessert: Cupcakes

A cupcake is never just a cupcake.
Cupcakes are not new. Cupcakes have been around the block. And cupcakes are no longer just a delicious bite of sugar and frosting, cupcakes are a symbol. When you see a cupcake, your brain interprets it as a message.
If food were sex, cupcakes would be masturbation. Self-pleasure. Cupcakes encourage you to take big gulping bites, lick that frosting from your fingers and feel a smug, personal satisfaction that is all yours. Plus, cupcakes are small and small is cute, and women are supposed to be cute. Non-threatening. Not taking up too much space.
Cupcakes say I splurge! But only a little. Just the adorable and acceptable amount.

No matter how much I eat, there is always room for dessert.

Dessert doesn’t go to the stomach, dessert goes to the heart.
